Drums, Vocals, and Percussion
Howard’s been singing & drumming since forever. He actually studied be-bop jazz in junior high, learning to musically listen via the singing of Charlie Parker solos note for note! Through a “haze” of high school, Howard fell in love with the psychedelic music of the Grateful Dead (Dead drummers, Bill Kreutzman & Mickey Hart remain an indelible influence). During College, NYC had its influence as Howard had numerous “stints” with original bands playing more modern music leaning towards new wave / punk rock genres (Howard loves the playing of Pete Thomas from Elvis Costello’s attractions). In Relic, Howard enjoys bringing all these influences to bear; from tight pop arrangements to the “opening up” on instrumental sections (in a syncopated fashion), there’s plenty there for Howard to “sink his teeth into!” His “Big 3”….the great signing drummers….Levon Helm, Don Henley & Phil Collins have provided great inspiration. Of late, it is being a voice in the wonderful 3 part harmony of the Relic singers that really “floats his boat”.
